Ever watched Fresh?

I recently had the pleasure of watching the documentary called “Fresh.” The purpose of the film was to inform the people of the United States what actually happens to the food they eat everyday. The tone was very sensitive and formal to all viewers. Some of the information given was the fact that farmers use growth hormones, pesticides, and compost containing dead animals for their plants and even their animals.  This means that diseases and sickness can develop in the food before we eat it. One aspect of the way Americans farm is that our systems way is not sustainable for the long run.

One part of the documentary that stood out to me was when a farmer named George Naylor from Jefferson, Iowa. He talks about his experience with the use of pesticide’s and herbicide's in his area. His fellow farmers would spray their crops as recommended from the government with their FDA approved chemicals. This would stop bugs and enrich their crops even more, supposedly. It was something that was effective in short term but not practical. George had a bad year money wise when he did not spray his crops like this fellow farmers. This costed serious business damage to him, even though he chooses not to spray.

To spray or not to spray is how I see the farmers in the documentary talking about this topic. It has many benefits to spray crops, but what about the drawbacks on humanitarian health. Many Americans have gotten sick from FDA approved chemicals in our foods over the last century. These chemicals are not only possible to be bad for the food, but for us too. According to Californians for Pesticide Reform.“Pesticides have been implicated in human studies of leukemia, lymphoma and cancers of the brain, breasts, prostate, testes and ovaries. Reproductive harm from pesticides includes birth defects, still birth, spontaneous abortion, sterility and infertility.” Link

After watching this documentary film, I realized that personally I did not think about what was in the food I eat everyday or how it was processed. It made me question what was happening in factories, plantations, and cattle farms. I even stopped eating certain products from the store. It was a good eye opener for those who might not be as alert to this as other people. Which is one of the reasons I believe that they made this documentary. If you would like to know more, feel free to watch it yourself. It is just over a hour long.
